Inverse Kinematics
While Forward Kinematics (FK) is simple to explain Inverse Kinematics (IK) is not. IK is much more versatile to animate with. Instead of having to select each and every single Joint and animate them individually (FK), IK allows you to select one Joint and by moving it, it effects many of the others it is hooked to.
Example: A person wants to animate a character reaching out and picking up an object. IK allows the Animator to select the wrist joint and then position all of the arm by only moving the wrist into position.
Example 2: A person want to animate a character jumping up. IK allows the Animator to select the Pelvis of the character and lower the entire body by simply dragging the Pelvis down. The legs will bend, the Torso will lower, and everything can be be positioned by interacting with only the Pelvis.
