Blu 42

Bar None one of my favorite assignments!!! This is an assignment that anyone can accomplish once they finish and learn the information from the Melon head project and Breakfast Lunch and Dinner.

In class I have the students nominate appropriate words for each category that I give them. I right down on the board the five best and most creative words nominated. The class then votes on which word from the five that they want to use.

They can then use these words together (however they wish to put them together) or by themselves and Image Search Keywords.

Categories

Emotion
Color
Random
Year
Hobby

Examples from the past:

Emotion: Angst
Color: Violet
Random: Razor
Year: 1984
Hobby: Gaming
From this list they used the words individually and saved every picture that they fell in love with. Then the students began to put them together to come up with new combinations like Violet Razor, Razor Gaming, 1984 Blu, Angst Gaming, 42 Razor, Violet Razor Angst... Once again saving every image that came up in the image search that they couldn't live without.

Once the students have a bank of images to pull from, they are responsible to build a digital collage from selection of these images. Students are focused on creating interaction and meaning in the image as selection are put in the final image.

I produced an image utilizing the same words and produced this picture...
Picture
In the piece above the computerized person came up on a search for gaming. The thing that is "zapping" his head was a sculpture that came up for the word "Angst". The "R" slightly above the head and sculpture was a logo that came up for the term "Razor".

This is an amazing project that ensures that every class will produce different results and every student will have images that completely unique and different from everyone else in class.

New Terminology

The basics of this assignment are what we have been using for some time. What separates this assignment from the others is the introduction of Color Theory and Composition. Anyone can, with a little bit of training and practice, come up with an image that can look real. Making it look aesthetically pleasing is a completely different topic all unto itself.
